[MCF2017] Public Lecture Series: The Colonial Invention of Bugis Identity: How A Community Was Mapped and Defined

Assoc. Prof Dr Farish Noor

Associate Professor

S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

In conjunction with Sirri na Pesse: Navigating Bugis Identities in Singapore special exhibition.

Looking back at colonial writings and images from the 17th to 19th centuries, Dr Noor will examine how and why the image of the Bugis people was reconfigured to suit the agenda of the colonial powers in the past. This has led to a situation where the internal complexity and depth of the Bugis people and their culture has been reduced, and in some ways reproduced until today.
